install xp on top of millennium

I have a computer with Windows ME on it. I would like to buy the XP Home
upgrade Cd for about $90.00 and install it on top of ME. Is this possible
or do I have to do a reformat and start from scratch?

If it is possible to put XP on top of ME, would I be foolish to do so?
Would it be wiser to remove ME and then install XP?

I would like to go to XP but I am afraid of things going wrong if I try to
do a reformat before I put on XP.

Any opinions/hints would be appreciated.

Yes, it's possible. Reformatting isn't necessary.

Although many people will tell you that formatting and installing
cleanly is the best way to go, I disagree. Unlike with previous
versions of Windows, an upgrade to XP replaces almost everything,
and usually works very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much
easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.

However, don't assume that doing an upgrade relieves you of the
need to backup your data, etc. before beginning. Before starting
to upgrade, it's always prudent to recognize that things like a
sudden power loss can occur in the middle of it and cause the
loss of everything. For that reason you should make sure you have
backups and anything else you need to reinstall if the worst
happens.

I would like to go to XP but I am afraid of things going wrong
if I
try to do a reformat before I put on XP.

Something can wrong either way. See my last paragraph above.

I agree with what Ken Blake said.

My upgrade was completely successful! That was
over a year ago. I have UPS here so I was not
concerned about loss of power.

Create a Checkpoint before you start and backup
all of your data files.

If I recall, in the installation you have an
option to save ME.

Mine is the PRO version and I couldn't be happier
with the results.

OK, but once gain I urge you to do more than hope. Protect
yourself with a backup.
