I don't quite understand what you mean by "admin privileges"...When you
install a Windows 2000 pro from the CD, I assume you're making a fresh
installation on a formatted HDD, so, no need of any privileges. If you're
doing an upgrade, yes you need admin rights but most of the time, you have
those rights. Is the workstation a member of a domain? Please put in more
detailed info so we can help you better

hi, pickle! thanks for the reply. what i meant with admin privileges was
admin rights. you're right. now, the pc is a member of a workgroup (all pc's
in this workgroup run win98) and currently has the network administrator
role. do i have to create a domain and will the other win98 pc's could access
my file? i want them to access my file or my whole drive. one more thing, if
i install win2k to my pc, (it's pentium 3, 500mhz, 20 gig hdd, 128mb ram),
can i use my pc as the network server?

Just put the windows 2000 professional CD in the Cd-rom drive of the PC you
want to upgrade and choose the upgrade option. In a workgroup, all PCs are
responsible of what goes in and what goes out, meaning that you need to have
all the same usernames and passwords of all client PCs who will connect to
each other for sharing purposes. It looks like you don't have a server, or
maybe you mistaken windows 2000 pro with windows 2000 server?? If so,
remember that if you plan on putting up a Windows 2000 server, it's up to you
to decide if you want to create a domain or not. If you do create a domain, I
strongly suggest you upgrade all Win98 to Win2000 pro, otherwise you will be
limited in terms of networking issues. And yes, in both cases, other PCs will
be able to access your files, as long as your plan your sharing scenario
correctly. And one more thing....your machine is not a smoking gun..I suggest
you plan on upgrading your hardware or buy a new one.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.
