Install SP1

I downloaded the "network installitaion" of XP SP1. I have a computer that
doesn't have internet or network access, and thought this would be the full
install.

When I extracted the files and opened /update/update.msi I get this message:
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (1033)
Microsoft requires use of the "Machine Assigned"
distrubition method when using Update.msi.
[OK]

I am guessing this means it must be installed over a network. However, this
is (almost) impossible. Any ideas?

Yeah run the update.exe program, not the msi.

Hi Matthew

The Network download will install onto a standalone PC running XP. After double clicking on the file, the installation should begin and show a 'Welcome to the Windows XP Service Pack 1 Setup Wizard'. Do you see that screen?

When I extracted the service pack, it didn't start the wizard. When I tried
update.exe, nothing happened.

Then I'd check the event log to see if it is logging a reason why. As Will
says though, simply running the downloaded 'archive' file "as is" should be
enough to start an install going.

If it wasn't for the fact that you've obviously extracted all the files from
the archive, I'd be thinking of bad downloads right about now.

That's actually the one I downloaded. The name is exactly
"xpsp1a_en_x86.exe".

It seems to extract the files OK, but it doesn't start the installation.

Hi Matthew

I've just tried the file on one of my PCs and it works correctly - extracts the files and then starts the installation. You may have a bad download. Did you use a download manager or IE?

The system section of the event log had this error:

The Network Connections service terminated with the following error:
The specified procedure could not be found.

The Applications part logged all the failed MSI installs, but doesn't say
anything about the .exe's.

FYI:
This computer was having serous trouble. I did a repair install from a XP
CD without SP1, then tried to install SP1 it from the download.

I don't know if this makes a difference.
