Here are the specific errors my father gets as he
attempts his upgrade from NT 4.0 to 2000:
Stop: C000218 Registry File Failure
Cannot load registry file
systemroot\system32\configsoftware corrupt or absent or
not writable

I believe there is a way to use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to determine the upgrade cpompatibility of the NT4 installation. Search on that I think it is called apcompat. In any case this might help:
