Install of XP Home Doesn't Recognize Mouse

Hello, My sister gave me her computer that had come with XP Home, but she had
put XP Pro on. She wanted to keep the XP Pro license for her new computer,
so I installed the XP Home over the XP Pro, reformatting the hard drive in
the process.

It got to the screen asking me if I was connected to the Internet to
register the software when I noticed the USB mouse was not responding. I
tried several different USB ports to no success, and I was unable to click
the no radio button, so I hit the reset button. I hope that wasn't a
mistake. It rebooted and came to the XP desktop, but there are no icons on
the desktop besides a recycle bin and the mouse still does not work. The
system tray has the message asking me if I want to take a tour of XP.

How do I get the USB mouse to work? It is a functioning mouse - I plugged
it into this computer and it works fine.

HELP!

You can use Tab and ALT and the arrow key to navigate.
What brand is the mouse?
Is your USB turned on in BIOS?
Can you download & install driver from the manafacture?
Is it a real old computer that may not have 100% USB compatable chipset (may
need new drivers for your MB)?

Thanks for replying. It is a Dell Mouse, no more than a year old.

I checked the BIOS. The only USB thing I found was something called Legacy
USB support that was disabled. I enabled it and restarted - no luck. Is
there something else in the BIOS to look for? I'm something of a neophite,
but not completely stupid. ;o)

The computer is no more than a couple years old - it's newer than the one
I'm working from right now, LOL!

Thanks!

Dells have a few issues with USB devices (or is it Windows...who
knows). Try plugging the mouse into a different USB port. If the
mouse is good, you should see something like a "New hardware found"
ballon in the right hand bottom of the screen.

Adam, Thanks for replying. I have tried rebooting with the mouse in every
one of the different USB ports - no luck. The computer is not a Dell, it is
from a small company here in the Seattle area.

I am willing to start over on the install, if you think that will help. Is
there some switch I should set in the BIOS before I start the install? What
about the "legacy USB" switch?

Thanks!

Doubtful that will help...do you have any other mice to try? Sounds
like it could be the USB ports.

Legacy USB won't help in this situation, I believe that just lets you
use USB devices in DOS.
