Install floppies for XP ?

J

JJ

Can the XP install be initiated with bootup floppies, the way it was done in
Windows NT ?

If so, how do you create those floppies ?

We have a computer that won't boot from a CD, and we can't change the
settings because of an unknown BIOS password. It would've been nice if we
knew how to reset the BIOS to factory default.

Thanks in advance.

Note: Make sure to download the correct set according to the Service Pack
level of your Windows XP installation CD.

Hello Carey:
I appreciate your info regarding the boot disks. However, what happens if I
don't have an installation CD? My HP machine came with a pre-installed System
Recovery/System Restore on drive C: Can I still use the boot disks? Thanks
for your reply,

One should ALWAYS HAVE the cd for the OS you want to use handy. If you
dont have one, then it's time to buy one.

If I were you, I would try to resolve the BIOS issue if possible. You might
need a Recovery Console boot some day and wish you had, for example.

On most desktop PC's clearing the BIOS with a motherboard jumper or removing
the CMOS battery for about 10 minutes will clear the password (and cause the
BIOS to revert to default settings). Laptops can be a more difficult issue.
See http://www.plasma-online.de/english/help/solutions/bios_password.html
and http://www.pwcrack.com/bios.shtml for some other info.

If you can boot to Windows, do this:
Click Start, Run (type) Debug [Enter]
Command Prompt Window opens and prompt changes to -

-o 70 2e
-o 71 FF
-q

That's the software equivalent of "Defaulting" BIOS. The character
after the prompt is Letter O, not numeral Zero. Once this done, on
the next boot BIOS will likely stop and report that BIOS defaults
have been applied and prompt you to enter Setup for configuration.

No, they're useful only if you have a normal installation CD. In your
case, you'll need to follow HP's recovery instructions.

HP Pavilions that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do
not come with Recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden
space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery
information.

Read the following article thoroughly, then follow
the steps outlined to perform a "non-destructive"
recovery operation.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=bph07145&product=71013&dlc=en&lang=en

If a "non-destructive" recovery will not work, then you'll have
to resort to a "destructive recovery" which will reformat the
drive, thus wiping it clean of all files before Windows XP is
reinstalled.

Here's how to remove the bios password...

goto www.bootdisk.com and create a bootable floppy and make sure debug.exe
is on the disk then at the dos prompt type....

DEBUG

and hit Enter. You'll see a dash (-) at the DEBUG prompt. Now type:

o 70 2e

which will show as -o 70 2e at the DEBUG prompt. Hit Enter. Then type:

o 71 ff

and hit Enter. Finally type:

Q

FYI o = the letter O not zero

I believe Hp has a very excellent recovery disks and cd creation tools
embedded in their computers. You just have to follow the instructions to the
letter. It's easy and very simple. I believe you just have to your f10
several times when your computer is booting up and go from there. Goodluck
