I am 99.9% sure that I have a defective XP disk. I have
never activated it, so that is in my favor, but I ALWAYS
get errors when I try to install it on a new hard drive.
I can install another operating system on the same hard
drive, so I have ruled out hardware. The errors are
always different so there is no pattern to them except
that most are that setup cannot copy a file, again
different each time I try and it won't go any further
when you hit enter for retry. I have been sitting on this
new software for a while (like months and months) waiting
to have time to do the rebuild and I doubt the retail
store will want to exchange it. Any suggestions on who I
should deal with or what else I need to do?

Call XP technical support and let them determine if it is defective or not. They can send a replacement if it is
Is it the same file everytime? Differnet files?

Some different files with some same files. But I had a
talk with the retail store manager and he agreed to give
me an exchange. So there is hope for humanity.

I bet the new disk does the same thing.

XP pushes your PC harder that previous OSes.
