install error that doesnt seem to have been discussed yet!!!

Hi, i just tried to install Vista in the upgrade mode (32bit version). I gave
the laptop a good dervice first to get rid of any spyware then rebooted and
run the upgrade via the DVD that seems to be created properly.
The install goes throught the first few screens fine and gets to the page
with the 5 install sections that get ticked as they complete - copying files,
sorting files etc or whatever they say..anyway it was all going well for
about 45mins and was on the 3rd section and a white box came up saying that
there was an error (no code) when the install was trying to boot into the
next install section and the install had failed.
The only option was to click OK which ended the install and returned me to
my XP Pro desktop.

Has anyone else had this? can i get around it??

I found out that it might is caused by the hdd. I guess you all have a hdd
with more than only one partition (me too). Somebody else in this help
section wrote that he had the same problem, then he tried to install it on a
clean hdd without any partitions, and it worked fine. I haven't tried this
for now, cause i can't lose my xp (i don't know how much i can do with the
new vista... hope many things ). If anyone tries this way and the problem
gets fixed, please let me know!

i have ordered my XP discs from dell for my laptop.. when they arrive i am
going to do a clean install of XP with no Dell crap!!!make a partition and
then install Vista from within windows but on the other partion and as a new
clean install, not an urgrade...
Infact seeing as i only use the laptop everyday for email and internet... i
might do a total clean install of Vista..then put all my programs on to that
just to see what happens and have a look... when it all screws up i will
scrap everything again and do a clean install of XP Pro.. good way to spend a
few days!!!
