instaling old games

I have tried to load several games, all of which are
supposed to be compatable with xp yet i keep getting
messages like

c:/windows/system32/autoexec nt, the system file is not
suitable for running ms dos and miscrosoft windows
applications. choose close to terminate the application.

can any one help
