I'm running windows XP Professional on my IBM thinkpad I
series laptop, anyway to put it into short terms my CD
rom drive which is a toshiba DVD/CD rom drive can
autoload software and play CD's but it will not install
programs off of a CD, the autolaunch menus show up but
when i click on the install option they seem like they're
going to load the automatic installer.........but nothing
happens? all of the programs i tried had previously been
installed on my machine and then uninstalled? the
problem is not with the CD rom drive
the programs cannot be installed off the hardrive either.
I'm wondering if the installshield is dead or what?
does anyone know anything about this phenomenon?

..

It seems that am having the same problem. This just
started recently for me as well. I have two CD drives
(one CD-ROM and one CD-RW) in my tower. When I am trying
to install (on either drive) the system hangs (the
CD "whirs" in the drive, then stops). I am able to open
the "read-me" files off the CD. I do not have a problem
with playing audio CD's, using data CD's or even burning.
It seems that the problem is with the installation (.exe)
files. I have tried to install from the Control Panel and
through Windows Explorer with the same results - no go! I
am up to date with my Windows updates and
supposedly "virus-free". I have no clue - as to why this
is happening all of a sudden. Because this is happening
on both of my CD drives - and I see that I am NOT alone -
I do not believe that this is hardware failure. Please
let me know if you find out anything that may help!
