inserting rows into a table

hi all

I have created a basic slide in powerpoint using the 'content layout' and
have inserted a table.

I now need to add a row at the end of the table but seem to be struggling.
I have looked this up on the 'Help' facility but this simply says to select
the last row in the table, right click and choose insert row. When I try to
highlight the last row, it doesn't highlight the whole row and when i
right-click i don't get the option to insert a row.

Where am I going wrong??

Thank you.

A couple other ways to add rows:

You can just place your cursor in the last cell and hit Tab. A new row will
be created automatically.

Alternatively, make sure you can see the Table toolbar that pops up when
you're working on a table. (If it's not there, click View | Toolbars |
Tables and Borders.) Place your cursor in the last row (no need to highlight
it all) and click Table | Insert Rows Below.

What you describe should work but try this instead. Make sure that in view >
toolbars - tables and borders is ticked and you can see that toolbar

Click in the last cell of the table and from the table drop down in the
tables and borders menu choose "insert row below"

Thank you for both replies, however, it still doesn't work.

When I hit the TAb key in the last cell, it literally tabs me across, it
doesn't create a new row (I actually use this method in Word so I know it
does work).

I have also tried using the toolbar but 'insert row', 'column' etc are all
greyed out??

Any more ideas?

Hm. The only way I can get the "insert row," etc., stuff to grey out here is
by selecting the actual table as opposed to just having my cursor in a cell.

Are you sure you're working with a real table? It sounds almost as if this
one has been ungrouped and is just a bunch of textboxes (or one big textbox)
and lines grouped together.

The initial table was created using the 'content' layout, however, it has
been ungrouped at some stage and is now regrouped as one complete object.

I have just tried what you have suggested on a complete new table and it
does work so my problem is obviously related to it being ungrouped at some
stage.

If it is now regrouped as one object, is there anything else I can try??

Louise,
That's the part where you missed out mentioning.
Once the table has been ungrouped, they will become autoshapes.
If you regroup them back, they will be grouped as shapes, not table.
As far as I know, there's no way you can get them back into a table again.

If you want to ungroup a table, the safest way to do in the future is to
make a duplicate of the table before you ungroup them. Then, drag one of the
tables out of the slide so that they will not be seen during the slide show.

Ah. What Shawn said, then.

In addition, if I were in your shoes and had to add another row to this, I'd
ungroup the thing until I was back to individual textboxes and lines, I'd
select the last row of textboxes, and I'd press Ctrl and Shift while
dragging those textboxes lower on the slide.

Pressing Ctrl while dragging creates a copy. Adding Shift to the mix
constrains the drag horizontally or vertically, whichever way you're
dragging.

Then I'd do the same with one of the horizontal lines. And I'd just draw new
vertical ones, probably. Or maybe I'd select all the vertical lines, group
them, and drag the bottom of the group to make them longer. Then I'd regroup
everything again. It just kind of depends on the "table" itself which way
I'd go there.

If you need to rearrange everything vertically -- like tighten the space
between "rows" -- you may want to group the textboxes in the various "rows"
and then use your arrow keys or the "distribute" options in Draw | Align or
Distribute to place the stuff fairly automatically. It doesn't always work
as well as I'd like, especially if some of the "rows" have taller textboxes
than others, but it will often get you close so you can then tweak by
nudging with the arrow keys.

Thank you all for your help. It was only when Echo mentioned group/ungroup
that I remembered this had been used at some stage in the past.

I always presumed that when you regrouped a table, you did exactly that and
it returned to a table. You learn something new every day.......

Thanks again.
