I need to insert a .mvi movie file into my PPT but inserting movie from file
doesn't work as it says "cannot display this type of sound or media. I can
open the movie from Windows Media Player and it works when I use hyperlink
for my PPT.

However, is there a way to insert the video into my PPT directly? I would be
converting the PPT into HTML and burn into CD so am worried the hyperlink
won't work if the other users do not have Windows Media Player. Hope someone
can offer advice, thanks!

Don't think .mvi is supported. PowerPoint uses MCI Media Player to play movies.
You might want to try out Plays for Certain that will converts your movie
into playable format:
