Why can't i get powerpoint 2000 to insert meg videos?

These are standard mpeg1 files and plasy fine in mplayer but won't play at
all with mplay32 which is obviosly a problem as that what powerpoint appears
to use.

I've tried all the sugested edting of the registry and re-installing of
codecs to no avial.

Any help apreciated

Put your presentation file and the MPEG in a folder on your C drive --
C:\test or something like that. Don't put them on your desktop.

Reinsert the video. Does it play now? If so, the issue is your file path was
too long. Or see http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm for some other
troubleshooting steps.

If those don't work -- or if you just don't want to mess with it any longer,
grab PFCMedia and be done with it. http://www.pfcmedia.com

no :-(

This is a real pain, I don't see why I should have to pay for a piece of
software to get round a basic Microsoft bug. We're a school with several
hundred machines and this fault is so inconsistent, some machines play fine
some don't there is no rhyme or reason as they all have a standard
installation set. It's impractical to get kids to download a video from the
web as a standard mpeg something they do quite often and them expect them to
have to convert it into a different format. Especially when it works on a
computer at home or the one next to them in the room using the same clip!!

Come on Microsoft get your house in order and fix these problems or at least
publish a fix. And yes I've tried editing the mci files as per every
article and Microsoft KB I can find, I've tried re-installing the codec
provided by Microsoft mp9 and the earlier ones as suggested.

There is obviously a compatibility issue somewhere, can PPT but forced into
using media player instead of mplay32?

Sure. Use Insert|Object and insert the video. The default media player
should play the file -- you may have skins and things, but sometimes that's
preferable anyway.

It IS a real pain, no question. But you don't have to buy anything. You can
wait for MS to fix it. It'll take a major update to Office, you won't see a
fix in a patch. The next version of Office isn't due out for quite some time
yet, and we've no guarantee that it'll solve the problem.

On the other hand, the guy who wrote PFCMedia put a LOT of time and effort into
providing a solution that's available NOW.

Sure, MS should have done it right in the first place, but they didn't and
there's not much we can do to change that.

I'm sorry if that seems unsympathetic. It's not meant to be. But sometimes
you have to take a hard, cold look at the realities of the situation, and the
reality is that MS doesn't have a fix and PFCMedia does.

You know how much your time and peace of mind are worth, so you're the only one
who can decide whether having the pain go away NOW is worth the cost.

I AGREE ! I just commented a couple of weeks ago about how I should not
have
to pay for Micro$ofts inadequacies.
Unfortunately all the MVP's slammed me for stating the obvious. Except
for
Myers of course. He was too big a coward to comment or reply.
Why cant Micro$oft just come up with the fix themselves, or better yet
copy
Myers's code. We all know they have done that in the past..
Lord knows Micro$soft doesn't have the money to just buy this Myers guy
off
and offer it to us loyal customers for FREE.

Once again Why should I have to pay for Micro$ofts Short comings?

Whatever.

I also wish Microsoft would make the multimedia handling aspect of PPT work
better, but they haven't done so. That's their decision.

It's my decision whether to help users or not, and I know that these types
of media issues are extremely difficult to troubleshoot over the newsgroups
and via phone. Heck, they're even difficult to troubleshoot in person! So if
there's a tool that works and alleviates many of these frustrations, I'm
going to suggest it to people -- whether it costs money or not. That's my
decision.

If you don't want to buy an add-in, don't. I don't really care. Be pissed
off at Microsoft if you want. I don't really care about that, either. But
just because you're frustrated (rightfully, IMO) with Microsoft doesn't mean
you have to take it out on the MVPs in general or Austin Myers in
particular -- or, for that matter, on any other add-in writer who happens
along.

And just for the record, all the MVPs did not slam you, although you deserve
quite a few slams after this little diatribe you posted.
