inserting hyperlinks in word docs?

Am I missing something easy about inserting hyperlinks in word docs? I need
to be able to place them within the text in specific places. I have tried my
best to follow the bookmark instructions, to no avail.
 
You must first insert a bookmark to hyperlink to.

You don't say what version of Word you're using but if it's 2002/XP you can
highlight the word/phrase and use Control K to insert a link
