inserting date

I'm tring to insert a date into cell using the Excel 2000
template. The date automatically updates and I do *not*
want it to change. There is no function in the field. Is
there a way to alter this without the date changing?
 
Yes, but will the date change if I look at the Excel
sheet tommorrow? I don't want it to change.

(nope, it doesn't.)

But if you use a formula like =today(), then you'll be mad.
