Inserting CD Corrupts XP

This is the weirdest thing I've seen.

Today I inserted a CD to install some software, and the system
froze. So I rebooted, and found I couldn't get past the Windows logo.
I tried safe mode, and it goes up as far as mup.sys before stopping.
I did a repair install, and all was well.

I chanced the CD again. Again, froze. This time, when I rebooted, it
now said that "Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM".

So I'm running a repair install again. Anyone have any ideas how the
above could be happening?

Yeah, I think the CD issue was just a sympton of another problem - it
certainly worked on another XP machine fine. I just ended up doing a
complete full install again, since it's not long since I did one and I
didn't have many applications I need to reinstall again.
