Inserting animation within a table on a slide (PPT 2003)

I have a presentation with a table in a particular slide. I want to add 48
items (mostly numbers) into that blank table. I suspect that I would do
that with custom animation. But when I highlight a certain item and try to
add an effect to it, the effect is added to the entire table. Is there any
way to add these 48 effects to the table short of inserting 48 slides into
the presentation (each with one more item added)?
