Inserting a CD in drive freezes computer

I don't know if this is going to make sense to anyone,
but I desperately need help. I built a computer for a
client, bought a copy of XP SP1 loaded that, office,
nero, photoshop, and a myriad of others like real player,
acrobat reader. Everything was fine and all of a sudden
the computer starts having problems when inserting a cd
in the drive. I can read one CD, if placed in the drive
before booting to XP, then removal and subsequent
insertion of another freezes the comp. In fact even if
the computer does not freeze, the new CD is not refreshed
and still displays the old removed CD title, and
sometimes will let me browse the OLD CD contents even
though a completely new CD has been inserted.

Help, I am desperate.

Microsoft SMARTDrive version 5.0 supports CD-ROM drive
caching. Any CD-ROM that is supported by Microsoft CD-ROM
Extensions (MSCDEX.EXE) can be cached by SMARTDrive.
May be that is the reason that you are unable to access a
different CD ROM.So try uninstalling the software if u
have. Also make sure that ur new CD is in working condition
so that ur computer doesnt hang.Try again by restarting
the computer.

Try changing the driver MSCDEX with the installation disk
with ur CDROM,

Lemme know if that works
