inserted picture not showing up

I'm trying to insert pictures into a powerpoint slide using ppt 2003
(with all available updates) using the Insert > Picture > From File
approach with pictures from the My Pictures directory. The pictures
appear in the thumbnails on the side of the screen and on printed
slides, but not on the main display. The outline of the picture is
there and I can adjust the size of it and move it around, I just can't
see the picture. I've tried saving it and inserting it as a .jpg, .tif,
..gif, and .pdf file and the same thing happens with all of them. Any
ideas?

You could try a couple of things. One is to set hardware acceleration back a
notch:
