After I use insert-picture-from file to insert a jpg, the jpg is visible in
the outline column and when I run the slide show, but is not visible in the
main window. The same is true if I try to add an arrow. The same is true if
I copy a jpg from a web site. I am useing Powerpoint 2003. Any suggestions
much appreciated.

Change your hardware acceleration.
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm for instrux.

Also make sure you have at least SP1 for Office 2003 installed. Go to
Help|Check for Updates to get the service packs.

Finally, you really don't want to copy graphics from the web and paste into
PPT. Assuming you have permission to use the image, right-click it and
choose Save Target As, then use Insert|Picture|From File to get it into PPT.

Many thanks for the help - notching down the accelerator did the trick.

Re the copy/paste approach to web graphics - permission issues understood,
but I am curious about why you recommend the Save Target approach, which
requires more steps.

Thanks again for the help.

Good question!

This http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00613.htm is why I recommend against
copy/pasting images from the web into PPT.

Besides, it's really not a good habit to get into. Copy/paste images from an
image editor into PPT usually creates an OLE object, which often increases
your file size tremendously.

Glad to hear the hardware acceleration sorted you out. If you haven't
installed at least SP1 for Office 2003, you should. It resolves a lot of
"missing graphics" and "can't open PPT file" issues in Office 2003.
