What is the difference between "Insert object" and "Copy/Paste"?
I want to bring few photos and objects (Visio flowcharts, Excel tables, Web
figures) into Word with less pain and in an easily manageable way.

Insert | Object inserts an OLE object. This allows you to edit the object in
place, using the tools of the application that created it (Excel, CorelDRAW,
etc.). This means that the object is very large. Copy/paste just inserts a
picture or text. Neither is the best way to insert a graphic; for that, use
Insert | Picture | From File.

When you're inserting content from Excel, you actually have three choices:
inserting an Excel OLE object, pasting and linking, or simply pasting. If
you don't need the Word content to update when the content in Excel is
updated, then just paste; the content is pasted as a Word table and is fully
part of Word.
