inkscape 0.44 and ai format

I downloaded the current version of Inkscape to open an ai file which
inkscape should be able to open. But I didn't succeed.
Any othr freeware to open ai files ?

I would be really surprised to find one. Adobe vigorously protects
it's file formats and encryption routines.

If you don't believe me, ask Dmitri Sklyarov.

I thought .ai is just a dialect of postscript, the .ai files I
have can be opened with text editor as well (of course I don't
want to edit bezier definitions in text modus).

In theory Inkscape already does the job, but I wasn't able to
configure it that way on Windows. On Linux it should work
out of the box.

I found an Inkscape manual that mentioned that importing ai images
probably only works under Linux. So, as I work under Windows, no choice.
