Ini files lost

While attempting to set up my laptop for a home wireless network
network. Windows XP crashed. Now when I start up I get
this message:
Critical resources seem to be missing: (Bitmap: SysTray
menu. Missing ini file or registry value "Systray Menu

I talked to support at the manufacturer (HP). They could
not resolve the problem or figure out why this happened.
Their suggestion was to uninstall Windows XP, then
reinstall it. Appreciate any suggestions so I can get on
with hooking the laptop up to my home network.
 
Have you tried to restore the Registry using System Restore?
