my IE6 seems to have been infected by sysecuritysite.com

Every time I open IE6 it goes to this website that is trying to sell me
virus protection (what a laugh).

the web site is NOT on the default home page, and it will not let me
navigate away...

HELP!!

(to use the internet, I open My Documents and use the search bar there which
so far does not go to the infected page...)

Hi M,

Seems you have been infected by malware. The address that you gave
sysecuritysite.com actually goes to sp2.information.com first. The US phone
no for information.com is 213 4080080.

I have seen this infection before but I cannot remember its source, but I am
pretty sure it is from a toolbar so I would suggest first doing a spyware
scan or uninstalling any toolbars that you have recently installed.

Also open up your Internet Options control panel (Start>Settings>Control
Panel>Internet Options) and on the Programs tab click the "Reset Web
Settings" AND on the Advanced tab uncheck the "enable third-party browser
helper objects" checkbox. This should reset your default search page, search
providers and start page but the next time you re-boot the malware may
re-infect IE unless you find and remove the malware.

You can start IE without a home page with Start>Run and enter either
iexplore.exe -nohome OR about:blank in the run dialog.

Regards.

Thank You! That worked.

I ran Spybot before and it did not pick it up... Why doesn't microsoft have
a fix for things that infect their software??

Thanks again

After the "fixes" a few days later, the infection RETURNED. the only fix
that worked was to disable IE and use Fire Fox.

Nope, that fix doesn't work either since your computer is still
infected. Depending on the type of infection, you may be sending your
keystrokes or your personal information out over the internet, or you
may be participating in a DDOS attack, or you may be relaying spam, or
worse, and you will continue to do this until you remove the infection.
