index with a preface

I am trying to create an index in a document that has a preface. I want the
page numbers in the index to show the assigned page numbers, not the page
number in the document (e.g. I don't want page i to be page 1 and our page 1
to be listed as page 2). How do I do this?

I have the numbering okay in the document. How do I make an index that only
includes the body of the text?

Don't put any index entries in the preface. Or are you talking about a TOC
rather than an index?
