Index page numbers

My index starts on page 390. I typed in the word Index and then position the
pointer below that and create the index. However, there is a "section break -
continuous" which shows up before the first line of my index. I cannot get
rid of that format. I believe that is what is making my index pages then
start over with numbering, so the 2nd page of my index is page 2 rather than
391 as it should be. There is also a "section break" format at the very end
of my index. How do I get rid of these two section breaks? and will deleting
the first one correct the page numbering?

No, don't delete the section breaks. Instead:
1. Click somewhere on page 2 of the index
2. Open the header or footer where the page number is
3. Turn off the "Same as previous" button on the Header and Footer toolbar
4. Select the page number field
5. Click on Insert | Page Numbers | Format | click the "Continue from
previous section" radio button | OK | OK
6. Close the header or footer.

If your index is in more than one column, then the Continuous break is
necessary. To correct the page numbering, View | Header and Footer, click
Format Page Number on the Header and Footer toolbar, and choose "Continue
from previous section."
