Index - How can I use periods to connect description to page #

RE: Microsoft Word 2003

I'm trying to type an Index directly (rather than use a template), and I
can't figure out how to use a repeating period (".") to connect the section
descriptor to the page number. Example:

Administration..................................................Page 1
Staff
Organization.............................................Page 2
etc.

I find that just holding down the period key produces groups of three
periods, and doesn't line up properly. Help!

You need a right-aligned tab stop with a period leader. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/SettingTabs.htm

But note that (a) what you are describing is probably a table of contents
(TOC) rather than an index, and it is far better (and much easier) to let
Word create it for you; see
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html, and (b) if you really
want an index, Word can do that automatically as well; see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm.
