MS Word Help instructs to "mark" index entries, but does not indicate HOW to "mark" them. Please enlighten this old man. Thanks.

Once you've marked the new items (by inserting fields manually or by using
the Index & Tables dialog) right-click the index & select Update Field.

Sure it does - you just need to dig a little deeper than the "About"
topic:-)

Take a look at the additional info in the topics:

Create an Index
Field Codes: XE )Index Entry) Fields

as well as the others that come up if you do a Help search with the key
words: mark index. (You don't mention which version of Word you have, but
the Help should still be there regardless - this is based on Word 2003.) If
you have specific questions don't hesitate to post them here.

Select the text you want in the index and press Alt+Shift+X. You can edit
the text in the Mark Index Entry dialog as desired. You can also insert XE
fields manually using Ctrl+F9 and typing XE "text you want to include"
between the braces. Note, however, that XE fields are Hidden text, so be
sure you have Hidden text displayed or your field will disappear as soon as
you type XE.
