Index.dat cleaner

I don't know if this is the proper forum for htis question, but I wondered
what folks considered to be a real good index.dat file cleaner. I have
tried ccleaner, but it is not finding the proper index.dat files for my
configuration and thus not removing them. Any advise about index.dat file
viewers and cleaners or manual methods would be greatly appreciated. Thasnk,
Bill

Bill,

I've used Acesoft Tracks Eraser for years and found it does the best job,
especially
since you can also configure it to custom erase any directory or file of
your choosing
on top of erasing index.dat entries, and emptying temporary directories for
windows and all major browsers automatically.

I guess I am concerned about it holding information that I would not like
others to have access to, such as sites I might have gone to. Am I being
paranoid? Do I not need to be concerned with this? Please advise. Bill

You can also remove it without using any third party software.
Press F8 or F5 for advanced boot options; then choose "safe mode with
command prompt; log in as administrator and then from there you can
delete them freely without windows preventing it.

just go to the root (c:\) by typing CD\

then type del index.dat /s then enter

and all the files names index dat in your computer will be deleted
permanently.

I have no problems using ccleaner. It cleans all the index.dat files
that I specify. However, some index.dat files can not be cleaned
until you reboot. The index.dat files associated with your profile
history, temp files, internet cache, etc. require a reboot in order to
be cleaned.

I can't seem to find a place in ccleaner where I can specify the proper
index.dat files. It has automatically selected three, but two are not the
ones for my profile. Thank you

Bill,
Do me a favor and download the tracks eraser trial and try it:
http://www.acesoft.net/
I haven't found any freeware that works as well. I don't normally do
shameless plugs, but this one is worth the $. The regular tracks eraser
is $20

As I said I mainly use it to empty all my temporary directories
automatically, and the index.dat erasure is a side benefit, albeit one that
I want also.

Also download winspy at: http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/indexdat.html

So you can see the contents of the various index.dat files before deletion.

Note that tracks eraser empties the index.dat file contents, but leaves the
index.dat file in its normal place intact.

I would recommend Index.dat Suite(freeware) -
http://support.it-mate.co.uk/index.asp?mode=Products&p=index.datsuite

This will find all the index.dat files and create a job to run
upon reboot. All the index.dat files will be deleted and Windows will
re-establish them as necessary.
The other benefit to this is that newly established index.dat
files will be much smaller.
