incorrect Trim-result

In one of my sheets Trim doesn't seem to work. I found out
that this is because the leading space has an ascii-value
of 160 instead of 32 (with Excel-function as well as in
VBA). This should mean that there is a leading bit 1
instead of 0 (128 + 32 = 160). It still is represented as
a space, not as 'à', so the ascii-value shouldn't be 160.
The strings where probably copy-pasted. I use Excel97.
What can I do. Manually changing everything would be a
gigantic job.
