i just purchased a second hand computer that had win98 on it. i bought a home edition of XP. when installing, at the part where i had to enter the product key i erroneously entered the key from the other computer i have that xp was pre-installed on.

now, every time i start the machine i've just installed xp on, it tells me that windows has to be activated. is there a way to put in to correct product key that i got with the new version i purchased? or do i have to take some strange manuvers?

Tell it to activate by phone, and before it gets that far, you will have a
chance to change the number.
