Incorrect amount of free space

Mark P

Using Windows explorer I get the following information about drive
partition C.

Capacity 7.84 Gb
Used space 6.65 Gb
Free Space 1.19 Gb
Size on Disk 4.92 Gb

Size on Disk refers to the amount used by all files (including system
and hidden files). I have recently defragmented the drive and checked
for errors.

Note - Less recently I uninstalled Visual Studio dot net because I had
no room left on the drive.

The page file has a separate partition all of its own.

Is there some kind of tool that is designed to fix this problem of
vanished space on my hard drive?

Short of a rebuild - is there a fix?

I've already seen this question unanswered twice before. Does anyone
have any idea of what's causing the problem and whether there is a
theoretical fix?

Ooops - Windows XP pro SP1.

You probably have compressed files. So there is no problem to fix and nothing is missing. Compressed files appear with blue names rather than black. Type compression in Help for more info, ignore Compressed Folders which is something else..

Have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and check the figures again. The figures for the
size on disk will be leaving out hidden, system, and protected files,
which would about account for it.
