Incomming mail server is changing name to "localhost" and causing errors

John Ross

I am wondering if there is a way to prevent the logon Information and the
Server Information field in the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) to change.
I my Outlook after few hours the User Name in E-mail Settings (POP3) is
changing from "xyz" to "xyz/mail server" and the Incomming Mail Server
(POP3) is changing to "localhost".
As a result of this I am getting an error 80042CCC or 80042108 when outlook
is checking my e-mail. After I undo the changes it works OK.

Any suggestions?
Tx.

it's your Antivirus program - disable email scanning and all should be fine.

The AV program works by acting as a proxy server, downloading the mail,
scanning it, then sending to outlook. As long as you use autoprotect, you
are just as safe - scanning the mail as it downloads just gives you early
warning. Most savvy email users can tell by looking at the subject etc if
the message is a virus or spam and they'll delete it unopened anyway - so
they don't need it scanned.

The newest versions of all popular AV programs use the antivirus API in
windows, eliminating the problem you have with localhost. However, I
wouldn't recommend rushing out to upgrade unless you really, really want
email scanning or a newer version. If you use a version of Outlook that
blocks attachments, have all the IE updates, keep the AV on autoprotect, and
think about what attachments you open you'll be safe.
