include page not refreshing

J

James

Running FP 2003..........all my pages have an include page (banner),
when I update the banner page all the pages show the changes locally,
but when I FTP the include page to the company hosting my site the
pages don't refresh and show the new content.

Right now I have to re-upload all my pages for them to show properly -
which kind of defeats the purpose of using include pages to begin
with.

Any help appreciated.

The FP Include Page Component is a design-time control which requires the FP extensions. So you must
upload the entire site to the server via FTP. You may be able to publish via FP FTP mode with change
page only selected.

Since the extensions are not installed on your remote server, there is no way for the FP Include to
merge into the content.

Tom: In all the years I've been working with FP, I've never seen a
requirement that the FP Include Page Component requires the FP server
extensions. It's a design time feature, not server side feature.

Tom you are correct in a sense, however you can not take a page to be included in other pages,
upload it via FTP to the server and have it actually be included.

However if the server has the FP extensions, and you upload the file via FTP (which is a no-no), but
then open the site in FP and run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks, the extensions will update all
pages using the Include content with the new content.

Well it is a assumption based on the fact that he stated that he uploaded the Include Page via FTP.
In general the only reason someone would do this, is if they did not have the FP extensions.

If the FP extensions were installed he could have just open the site in FP and made the changes to
the Include Page, and the site would have been updated automatically once he save the page.

Or it could be that I'm still fairly new with Frontpage and that
FTP'ing the files has worked just fine until now :)

I'm pretty sure my provider supports FP extensions, I will have to
verify that with them.

If they do, then all I do is create/open my web based on the URL
(http://www.jamesplee.com) and whenever I make changes tell it to
publish and it will update the site?

Thx,

J.

Yep...but have your ISP repair the FP extensions first, as they are most certainly been wacked by using 3rd party FTP. Then you'll be able to use Publish.

Or you could just open the remote site and make the change and then publish the site back to your
local PC. But as Crash as indicated, if the extensions are installed, they have most like been
corrupted and will need to re-installed.
