When receiving a large message, I receive the message that says server has
timed out, and the messsage is lost.

I have Outlook 2003 and Kapersky anti virus scanning incoming mail.

what type of email account do you use? Are you scanning incoming mail with
antivirus?

try disabling the email scanning module - you may need to uninstall it and
use a custom install to remove the email scanner from the main antivirus
program.
