inaccessible_boot_device BSOD & Ch000021a "fatal system error"

Having a problem with a hard drive: It goes some of the way into Windows and
then crashes so I don't think it is the drive itself. So I try Safe Mode and
basically I am getting an inaccessible_boot_device bsod AFTER I have loaded
all the drivers and the black screen comes up before showing the cursor and
going into Windows. It thinks about it for a few seconds, no cursor comes
up and it BSODs.

Tried the recovery console and CHKDSK /R. It told me I had one or more
irrecoverable problems on the volume.

Tried going into BartPE and it starts loading XP and then gives Ch000021a
"fatal system error"

The only relevant background is what I was doing on this computer when it
did this: Windows 2000 was working properly and I was putting some spare
HDDs on the secondary IDE chain as primary drives to test them. I was doing
it with the Hitachi CD boot disc which uses Linux and it was telling me that
various of them were dead. I didn't go into Windows although I did try with
some of them in place and it wouldn't let me. So there might be minor
corruption on the load files with some crashes on loading windows because
the HDDs on the secondary IDE were not working properly? Personally I cannot
see how this could have affected the Windows files on the C boot drive on
the primary IDE? I was also using FindPart to repair another drive which
had lost its partition table using this computer and had copied various data
files to this hard drive.

Linux loads properly (knoppix) and on HDA1 can only see NTLDR, NTDETECT,
pagefile.sys and some innocuous directories (a Findpart directory, an AV-CLS
directory which I had installed in the past for anti-virus checking, a temp
directory and a recycle bin. No MyDocuments directory, no ProgramFiles
directory, and no Documents and Settings directory).

No logic there... Why don't you think it is the drive? Aside from your
previous words that you do have a hard drive problem.

There are numerous 'hits' with google on this type of error, but none
are 'good'.

Only that it seems to know enough about the setup that there is Windows on
it, to load the drivers adn know where they came from etc

And Knoppix gives these curious results?
