Using Word XP, when placing I-beam on the page, small lines appear, sometimes
accompanied by a small arrow. What do they indicate please?

I think what you're referring to is something called "click and type".
Depending on where your mouse cursor is on the page, when you click, the
alignment will change.

So if your cursor is in the left, the text will be left aligned, in the
centre, the text will be centred, and on the right, you'll get right aligned
text. You'll see the little lines by the I bean change as you go into the
different regions...

Pete.
