in query expression 'MSysAccounts.name'. ERROR

When I open an existing DB or create a new one, I cannot open tables or
queries. I can't open them in design mode either. I just get an alert
dialog that says, "unknown" for newly created test DB's.

When I go to the Security / User and Group Permissions menu then I get an
alert dialog that says, "in query expression 'MSysAccounts.name'." When I
click okay then the users and groups window appears, but neither Admin nor
Users is in the left box. If I go to the Change Owner tab and try to change
the owner then it says I do not have permissions to change the owner. Even
though the "current user" is "admin".

I cannot use any DB, new or existing.

I have "repaired" the application and nothing changed.
I have "uninstalled" the Access component of Office (2K) and re-installed.
No change.
I have totally uninstalled MS Office 2000 and reinstalled. No change.

I am totally stumped and so is our IS/IT department.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Thank you very much for the response.

I performed a search for *.mdw files on both my laptop (with the problem) and
desktop (working fine). The laptop runs Access 2000 9.0.4402 SR-1 and the
desktop runs Access 2000 9.0.6926 SP3.

There were quite a few mdw files on the laptop. However, all but one are in
the installer disk copies directories. I'm assuming I can ignore these. The
two pc's only showed one file in a common location. It was C:\Program Files\
Common Files\System\SYSTEM.MDW. I replaced the one on the laptop with the
one from the desktop. But I'm still having the same problem.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Use the Access WorkGroup Administrator to create and join
a new workgroup.

Are you an administrator on your own laptop? Is there
still a problem if an Administrator logs in? You normally
need write and create permission to the folder where
the MDW is located. I assume that you have that, because
you just replaced the file.

My next step would be to completely re-install Office.

To do a complete re-install, you need to use the Office
Resource Kit to 'clean' Office off of your pc after
uninstalling it.

Thank you for the assistance.

Where can I find the Office Resource Kit, so I can clean up after the un-
install?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi again,

I found the MS web site that has the different Resource Kit downloads (
http://www.microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/2000ddl.htm). Can you be more
specific on which kit I should download? Any details you can give me on
cleaning up after an un-install will be much appreciated.

Thanks again,
Andrew

I think I sent you to the wrong place. Try this:

Utility to completely remove remaining Office CD1 files and registry entries

Then copy system.mdw from another PC.

Well, it sounds like just what I need. Unfortunately I'm running XP. They
even disabled the tool so it won't run on XP, even if I wanted to gamble.

I'm sure open to any ideas that will save me from redoing the drive from
scratch (which will will put me out of work for two days).

Any other thoughts?

Thanks again. I really appreciate the effort.

Andrew

Update:
Per my post above, I couldn't use the utility suggested. However...

1) I uninstalled the Oracle 10g Client. This was the last significant thing
done or installed prior to the problem. However access ran quite fine after
the Oracle install. I know because I later used Access to manipulate data
retrieved by the Oracle Client.

2) I ran the Office2000Pro install and chose to completely uninstall office.
Note: At first it wouldn't let me. Either the setup.exe gave an error
(sorry, I didn't copy it down) or the add/remove programs said some path was
too deep. So I used the add/remove programs to "repair" Office. Then I used
the setup.exe and chose to remove Office. Also note that I did not remove
FrontPage. I just now thought about it.

3) Then I ran CCleaner and RegCleaner, a few times, until both said all was
clean. Note: CCleaner picked up that the MDW file was not associated to
anything and cleaned the entry.

4) I re-installed Office. I have not re-installed the Oracle Client.

5) I tried Access. Same problem. Aaaarrrrgghh!!!

Any ideas? Anything that would save me sending in the PC to our IS/IT group
would be a terrific help, as I'm a remote user and I have to mail it back,
let them redo the drive, and mail it back to me. (It would be a nice paid
vacation, if I didn't have to make up the lost work later.)

Thanks again,
Andrew

Groan.

Well, if it was me, I'd keep playing, because I don't have an IS/IT group,
but I wouldn't expect to get it fixed any faster.

You can try the MDAC checker,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...f6-4a21-4b43-bf53-14332ef092c9&DisplayLang=en

and you can try re-registering VBA and DAO

"You might want to go ahead and try re-registering your DAO360.dll file. It
won't hurt anything to
re-register it if it's already properly registered. To register this file,
first find it on your
hard drive. Close Access (and any other software that might be using this
..dll file). Then click
Start > Run and enter the command "Regsvr32" (without the quotes). Drag the
DAO360.dll file that
you found to the end of this line, making sure that there is a single space
inbetween the name of
the executable and the filename. This way, you won't need to deal with
typing in the long path.
Alternatively, use Method 1 in the resolution section of this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=248790
"
both dao and vba are in the /common files/microsoft shared/ path

Thanks for all the assistance. I even went through the knowledge base
article and manually deleted every file and registry entry associated with
Office. Then I re-installed Office. Same problem. I sent the PC off this
afternoon to be re-ghosted.

Thank you again for the effort.

Regards,
Andrew
