in formula bar, cursor width increases - cause unknown

I was working successfully in a simple spreadsheet, when I noticed tha
- while editing formulas in the formula bar - the cursor width suddenl
changed from the normal, skinny cursor to a slightly fatter/wide
cursor. It still blinks normally, but is wider than it should be an
therefore harder to place precisely where I want it in a formula, an
harder to determine precisely where it is in a formula.

I restarted, of course; and even tried a System Restore, but with n
luck.

The cursor behaves normally in other Office programs, such as Word.

The same thing happened to me two years ago, on another computer. Bot
times, I think the change in the cursor's behavior was set off by som
combination of keystrokes that I made, but I haven't been able t
replicate or undo them. Both times, I was using Excel 2002, Windows XP
Dell.

Any ideas

Tapeery,
Sounds like you accidently hit the insert key. Try
hitting it again, and see if the cursor width changes back
to normal

Thanks for that suggestion - I think you're right that I hit the Inser
key, and that's what made the cursor "wide." I hadn't thought of that.

That said, there may be something else going on here as well, becaus
when I type characters into the formula bar, they do *not* overwrit
existing characters. If I had activated the Insert mode, I'd expec
each keystroke to result in a single character being overwritten
Instead, the existing characters just move to the right, as in norma
mode.

So the mystery remains. The problem seems to have disappeared for no
(I don't know why).

And thanks again
