In Excel how do I set up the list from the Data dropdown menu?

I'm studing Excel at SMC, and in the tutorial it says to click on Data on the
menu bar then point to List. But on my laptop it is not listed. Does anyone
know how I can add this to my computer?

Click on Data
Select: Validation
Then select: Allow: List

It's now telling me to add a source, and I have no idea what that could
possibly be.

The List feature was introduced in Excel 2003. In earlier versions, you
can add dropdowns to the column headings by choosing
Data>Filter>AutoFilter, but all of the List features won't be available.

I may have misunderstood your question. I thought you wanted a drop down
