In Access How to calculate field based on another value.

I have a report that needs to sum an amount field. But in some cases, the
amount is added to the sum, and in some cases it is subtracted, i.e., the
amount field is always positive in the database table, but for this report,
it sometimes needs to be treated as negative. Whether it's treated as
positive or negative depends on the value of another field. I think I need a
calculated field in the query but I don't know how to include the conditional
- how to make the query multiple by either 1 or -1 depending on the other
field. Or do I need another approach entirely?

Can you describe the circumstances under which it needs to be subtracted
instead of added?
