Improvements, but stil lsome disappointments in OL2007: my suggest

There are many nice new things in OL 2007, but also some disappointments.
Here are some suggestions:

- Why can't OL exit? It takes FOREVER to get it to be gone (not just having
the windows closed, but gone). Make exit mean exit.
- Hate there is no way to set a default view for new folders. Hate that I
can't apply a new view to to an entire folder hierarchy. Actually want to
set a lot of stuff for a folder hierarchy (like archive settings, etc).
- Nice that search is integrated, but it is too slow. I can see the disk
grinding loading DLLs before it starts. I have a Core 2 Duo and plenty of
memory.
- Can't MS find a better way to enter the time of an appointment. Drop down
lists have to be the worst thing to use to enter a time.
- Flags are nice but I'd rather have tagging than flagging. And I mean real
tagging not the kludge in ON 2007.
- I want to switch the calendar display to swap the timezones I am viewing
WITHOUT changing the timezone on my laptop. I go to Asia next week and want
to see what my week looks like.
- How about a smart tag the recognizes time and dates in the notes of an
appointment and lets us set that time as the start or finish time. Same for
dates.
- The stuff to integrate Live to OL is nice but I keep having to click to
get the maps. Should be able to allow this permanently.
- I have a tablet and tablet support is pitiful. Why do I have to use the
writing area. ON is better and OL should start with what they do and then do
more.
- Doesn't seem to gracefully handle changes into hibernate/sleep and back.
- Speed, speed, speed. Still sluggish. OL isn't a productivity boost if I
have to wait for it to respond.
- Since search is integrated, why can't search views cross PSTs.

Could I rant about the "exit" thing for a minute?
Why can't they get this right? EVERY version of Outlook I have
used has the same problem.
Maybe it's because they blame it on add-ins and other applications.
NO, all I use is plain old can't exit Outlook.

Most of your suggestions has been possible since the first version of

2) View-> Current View-> Define Views-> edit the default Messages view
Inheriting/propagating folder specific settings has been put on the wish
list last week (with a lot of MVP witnesses ;-)
3) WDS is not being developed by the Outlook team
4) You don't have to use the dropdown; just type in the field directly
5) Use Categories
6) Add an additional Time Zone to the view; right click on the left time bar
and choose Change Time Zone-> Additional time zone
7) I'm not sure how you see that work. If you put the date in the notes
section why not just put it correct field? Notes can be used for a lot of
text like adding a planning which could include many dates
8) Live Local is being developed by the Live team and not the Outlook team
9) Press Start Inking and you are ready to go
10) Could you give an example? I never shut down Outlook or my Tablet (I let
it hybernate) and I have no issues reconnecting not even when I switched
networks
11) Being worked on (on several levels) by the Outlook dev team. You might
want to be a bit more specific in where performance is the biggest issue for
you. There are a lot of non-Outlook caused issues resulting in poor
performance of Outlook like 3rd party add-ins.
12) It can. You can use the All Mail Items on the left of the screen or
reconfigure your Search Options to always search through all your items.

This is what we hear from the OL team all of the time, but my problem isn't
add-ins, it is just OL. And even for add-ins or other programs that may
access OL, they need a way to terminate now without having to recover the OL
ost the next time I start. In my case, the only other thing that might have
OL open is Vista search.

Thanks. I guess I am dense and didn't know that the "Messages" view was the
default for all message folders. Once you say it is is obvious, but...

This is a Microsoft internal issue. Seach is a key and intregal issue for
OL and as a customer I don't want MS's internal organizational issues getting
in the way of me getting a good and workable product.

Not the point and not the best way for a tablet user to do this, or anyone
else for that matter. Look at somehting like what WebIS has done for time
entry on the PocketPC to get ideas. MS can do at least as well. Shame on
them for not improving this.

I do, but it isn't as convenient. Give me real atgging.

I already do, but that isn't what I am talking about. I want to see my week
in the foreign timezone. If there is a 12 hour offset, then things wrap
weirdly (bottom of one day top of the next). I want to see things as though
I am in the other time zone WITHOUT having to change the PC time zone. And
print them that way too.

I get an email with a flight itinerary and it has times. There are smart
tags that can already detect a time. If these worked in the notes seciton of
an appointment and had an option when clicked to set start or end time, it
save typing, cutting, pasting, etc. Isn't that what smart tags are for?

Understood. The issue isn't Live Local, but use of the OCX in the
appointment. I should be able to allow it once and not for each instance.

I get prompted for passwords and they don't work. This happens with hotmail
accounts and pop3 accounts. Exchange seems OK. I also get these long delays
and sluggishness when it is trying to update after returning.

Switching folders or PSTs is an example. Speed of bringing up a new
appointment or calendar item for entry. I can go on, but most new dialogues
and switching views or features causes delays that are noticeable and
annoying. I have a Core 2 Duo, Vista, 2 GB, etc. Shouldn't be that slow.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant the "Search Folders" that do things like
display Unread Items. I want one that works acrsoss multiple PSTs.

In the same theme, I also have some suggestions for future versions.

1. Upon right-clicking a message, it would be great if I could simply add a
small note to the message. I know that there are categories etc, but all I´d
like is a small "post-it" like addition to the message in my inbox with my
personal notes.
2. Ability to associate documents on my computer with emails in my inbox,
like a link to the document.

Both of these ideas would be of great use to me when I need to make phone
calls and want to quickly find documents or other notes that are associates
with the phone call.
