Improperly sized/shaped browser window when maximized

Internet Explorer 6 came bundled with my computer (running XP Home) and I am not sure whether or not it was SP1, but I have SP1 now. I was at a website with a lot of pop-up advertisements. I had closed each ad except for one, and I don't know if I missed or something, but a message box came up saying

"The website you are visiting is trying to close this browser window. Do you want to close it?

I'm not sure if those were the exact words, but anyway, the next time I maximized a window, it maximized improperly and now half of the screen is covered by the window and half is empty (just my desktop in the background). Occasionally, a window will maximize fully, but most of the time, it just hangs there over halfway off the screen. How can I get it maximized fully again

(If it helps, my computer is a Dell Dimension 4550 running XP Home and my display settings are 1024x768 with 32-bit color and I lowered my graphics hardware acceleration after a program kept crashing.)

I don't have an answer to this question but found myself
here on the boards looking for the same answer. All other
programs will maximize fully and only explorer was
effected after this mysterious pop up add, any updates or
settings changes have been ineffective as well.

Thanks
Alissa

Remove any 'Auto-hide' option for the Windows taskbar and while the window
is maximized, resize the taskbar then return it to the desired size. This is
to try to make Windows re-calculate the window size and boundaries.

If no joy, run regedit and remove these registry key values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.
