Importing .wab file from Outlook 2003 to 2007

D

DaveBobW

I am trying to imoprt my Contacts which I saved as a .wab file in Outlook
2003, onto a new PC with Vista Home Premium.

Frustration? You bet - 2007 reckons it's converted the file which is now 44
Mb into my 'Windows Contacts' folder but so far, I can't see anything in my
Outlook Address Book.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

David W

I've always used MS Outlook - when I migrated from my old PC I saved the
AppData folder onto CD.

As there was a folder called Address Book I assumed that was where my
contacts would be saved.

How can I get my previous Contacts information into Outlook 2007 on Vista
Premium, previously Outlook 2003 on Windows XP?

Thanks,

David W

Outlook does not use a WAB file and never has. Post your question more
accurately. Were you ever using Outlook or were you using some other
program like Outlook Express?

That's OK but although emails were restored, Contacts weren't; I used a
backup file made by the downloaded Outlook 2003 backup program and when I
tried to open it, I got a message saying it may not recognised by my current
version of Outlook or it may be corrupted. I'll try to get my old PC on to
get the actual .pst file instead.

There is no address book in Outlook. Contacts are stored with all the rest
of your Outlook data. The file you need is your Personal Folders file
(*.pst) It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

Note that some of the information on these pages is outdated and no longer
applies to Outlook 2003 or 2007. Specifically:
1. Ignore any advice to copy your PST file to Outlook's default location
to
connect it to your profile. Doing so only corrupts your profile. Copy it
anywhere BUT the default location and open it within your Outlook profile.
2. Ignore any advice that tells you to use export or import to transfer
Outlook data. That has never been sound advice, but the process has become
too deeply flawed now to be of any use whatsoever.

You can't import a WAB file into Outlook. Import the WAB into Windows
Contacts and then export them into a CSV. Import that CSV into Outlook.
