Importing text files

Help, please. I'm trying to import a huge (325 mg) file from Census
2000. The file extension is ".uf3" without quotes. Access responds
that only files with extensions such as ".asc" or ".txt" or ".html" can
be imported. I can bring the file into Notepad or other text editors
like VEDIT or BOXER, and can tell you that the file is ASCII with comma
delimiters.

Changing the extension from .uf3 to .txt on the file listing doesn't
work. Access responds with the same message. When I examine the
properties of the file, I find that its extension is now ".txt.uf3."
Huh? Can't get rid of that .uf3 extension.

Any solutions?

How are you changing the extension? If it's through Windows Explorer, do you
have it set up to display file extensions or not?

In any case, see whether http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306144 helps.
(Don't worry that it says it's for Access 2000: it applies to all versions)

Hi Curmudgeon - have you tried pulling it into Notepad and then Saving As (or
any other WP) ? It should work.

Thanks, Doug:

When I changed the extension from .uf3 to .txt, I neglected to ensure
that the dot wasn't deleted. Duh!

Appreciate your response and all the responses to make to perplexed
ACCESS users in this group.
