Importing not working in outlook 2002

My problem is that when importing into outlook. I select the file to import
then the next screen does not allow me to go any further as the next button
and the map custom fields button are greyed out.

I have spent many hours now trying to find a solution and followed lots of
advise, so far I have tried importing from access, excel, csv and have the
same problem with them all.

I updated my installation so everything is loaded correctlt, I ran the
detect and repair and all seems ok.

I do not have a box to tick in the import system which a lot of forums
mention. 2002 obviously does not have this or its extremely well hidden.

Can anyone help please

do you have the same version of Outlook as the other software you are
importing from eg Both 2002?

Could you explain your exact steps please?

Hi Judy,

Yes they are all 2002 with service pack 3

Step 1 - selected my e mail list in outlook
step 2 - selected the import export wizard
step 3 - seleceted import from another program or file
Step 4 - selected microsoft excel
Step 5 - I chose the file to import and selected do not imports duplicate
items
Step 5 - I confirmed the destination folder
Step 6 - Well this is where it goes wrong the wizard will not allow me to
move forward as they next and the map custom fields are greyed out

I have tried this using access and CSV as well

Do you have a "named range" in Excel that you are importing? Name the
range. Close Excel and then try importing again.

Hi Judy,

I appreciate your help.

When I tried to import on my firs attempt it would not allow me with the
error saying that I have to set up a named range, I did this and all seemed
to be ok and when I tried importing a second time that error never came up so
I assumed that was successful. So yes I have done that.

To make sure that it was not an excel problem I also tried importing from
access which again I had to set up a table to prevent the same problems as I
had with the excel named range.

I cant believe such a simple task has turned out to be so difficult.

Hi Judy,

Ok I did that but alas its still the same for all 3 of the methods I have
tried to use.

I am going to give this a try on my laptop just in case that works, fingers
crossed.

Hi Judy,

last week I formated my laptop hard drive, I installed windows XP and
Microsoft XP Professional.

Today was the firts time I have used this laptop so I copied my excel and
access file into the documents directory, these two files are the only ones
on the computer.

I opened outlook which had never been used before and tried the same import
but had the same problems, the last step is greyed out.

This tells me its something to do with the software itself not a problem
that has occured from use.

By the way I have looked at your web site and its very impressive, I will be
back later to have a proper look as I have just completed a web site that I
am about to market. Hence I need my 3,000 e-mails importing.

On the last screen where the "Map Custom Fields" is grayed out - is the
checkbox "checked" on the left hand side under the heading "The following
actions will be performed" which should the folder you're importing to?

If that box is not checked, the "Map Custom fields" does not become active
(or vice versa - however one wishes to describe it). Highly unlikely that
anything is wrong with your Outlook config.

Hi Karl,

Thank you for your reply, however I have heard the same thing on all the
forums that I have gone to, but the problem is there is no checkbox anywhere
at all so I cant do anything that helps.

If you know any other way to make such a box be checked when its invisible
that would be a great help.

It seems that this problem is not solvable so i am now looking at upgrading
or usieng another contact software

why are you using import/export? there may be better options for your needs.
If you are just moving from machine a to machine b, copy the pst. if you
need the data in another program, use a table view and copy then paste into
the other program.

Just for interest's sake - is anything listed at all under "The following
actions will be performed"? (left hand side of screen where the Map Custom
Fields button is located). If the listbox is empty at this point,

1) there will be no checkbox to "check"
2) the Map Custom Fields button will be grayed out
3) if this is the case, might want to run ScanPST on your PST file to
determine if any errors exist on the PST file itself. You may also want to
create a new contact folder purely as a test exercise and select that as
your target folder to see if the behaviour changes in any way. To retract my
statement in my previous response - given the description thus far, a
configuration problem does indeed appear to exist.

As for O'2002 not having a "checkbox" - can assure you that when everything
is running correctly - it appears since the Import/Export process hasn't
changed much (if at all) for any version of Outlook at least since O'2000 if
not earlier. Normally, this would where I'd suggest that you may be
interested in one of our products re: Outlook importing
(http://www.contactgenie.com/cg20features.htm) but there is an underlying
problem somewhere that should be identified and fixed first (that's further
assuming that there is a need to import as was asked by Diane).

Hi Karl,

My outlook does not have any words like actions will be performed anywhere.
I wish I could take a screen shot and show you, I do not have any listbox.

I tried a new folder but that made no difference, I will now try the scanPST
and get back to you but I dont have much hope.

Hi Diane,

All my e-mail were downloaded from an e-mail service I used which downloaded
them into a text file only, with this text file I then copied them into excel
and access to try and get them into outlook.

I can copy them from excel but how can I past them into outlook, as far as I
can work out the only way is to import them or one by one in new contacts.

Thank you all for your help, I will se what the scanPST does

Hi Karl,

I cant work out how to scanPST as you suggested, this may be basic but can
you point me in the right direction, at this point I will try anything.

How do I run ScanPST ?

Hi Guys,

I found a solution, I downloaded a piece of software called MAPILab mailing
list services. This "add in" has a feature to get contacts from a text file
so I used that and now I have my 3,000 contacts in outlook.

The first thing I have done is export it out again as a PST file so I dont
get the same problem again.

This is a trial ware but I am pretty sure I will end up buying it as it has
other features that I like as well.

Thank you all for your time and assistance.

How can anyone say "skydive" and "safety" in the same sentence and keep a
straight face?
The first thing I have done is export it out again as a PST file so I
dont get the same problem again.

Why would you do that? Exporting, especially contacts, is a good way to
lose data. Since it's likely already in a PST once it's in Outlook (unless
you're using Exchange), then you HAVE a PST. Just close Outlook and copy
the PST. No export/import whatsoever.

Sky diving is VERY safe - it's the sudden stop at the bottom that's the
killer!

Sorry for the delay in responding but unfortunately was hit with a 12+ hr
network outage. Since you also indicated that you have a found an
alternative solution - this is also all academic but will post the response
regardless....

#1 - In one of your original messages you listed the steps you followed
culminating with:

It would be really interesting to see what exactly is displayed on the
screen above since that's the only place where the Map Custom Field button
is displayed and on the left hand side of that window there is generally a
listbox with the heading "The following options will be performed". Just to
double check this again, also ran an import on our own O'XP test system so
it would seem that you have a window showing in step #6 above that is
different from any one else's standard config

#2 - as for ScanPST - believe for O'XP - ScanPST would be found at
c:\program files\common files\mapi\1033 (for North America)
