Importing messages from outlook

hi,

I am trying to set up my email account on windows mail on a new computer. I
had outlook on my old computer and want to import all my saved messages from
folders and my inbox onto my new computer. I set up my email account but
nothing is importing. When I click on send/receive it connects to my email
provider then disconnects quickly. Anyone have any idea why? Or what I am
doing wrong?

Thanks!

Windows Mail won't import directly from Outlook unless you have Outlook
installed on the same computer to give it some help in understanding the
..pst file. You have two choices: 1. Install Outlook, version 2003 or
later.
Version 2002 will also run but with a few problems. A trial version will
run more than long enough to help in the import. 2. Import from Outlook
to Outlook Express on your old computer. Then import from Outlook
Express to Windows Mail:

I am having the same trouble and I followed all the instructions to export
the files to Outlook Express and then copied the message files to a CD. When
I try to import them with WinMail it cannot find any files on the CD. So
then I moved the files to a local folder on my new Vista computer and got the
same error message. AAACK!! I've been working on this for 5 days now.
Anyone else got any ideas for me. I've tried HP's online chat help and they
gave me the same help links that Robert did.

What gives???

Did you remove the Read Only attribute from all the .dbx files in the folder
on your hard drive?
Right click>properties>

Does the store contain a non-corrupt Folders.dbx file?

i was having trouble copying both the folder.dbx and inbox.dbx files to a CD,
but I was finally successful in getting them over to the CD after making the
folder.dbx file a read only file and then returning it to a regular file.
I'm importingn my files right now. Thank God for this discussion group.
I've been so frustrated and now I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks!

Windows Mail won't import directly from Outlook if you don't also have
Outlook installed on your new computer. It needs part of Outlook to be
able to under stand the .pst file type. You have two choices: 1. Install
Outlook, preferably version 2003 or later, on your new computer, and
then do the import. Version 2002 will also run under Vista, but with a
few problems. A free trial version will run more than long enough for
the import. 2. Import first from Outlook to Outlook Express on your
old computer. Then use these instructions to import from Outlook
Express to Windows Mail:

<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>

After you copy the files to your new computer, but before you import
them into Windows Mail, make sure they are read-write instead of
readonly, like some copying methods make them.
