No, I believe it's a bona fide update of the 4 version. When I went online
this morning, it said a new version was available, and did I want to
download & install it? I said OK. Entirely seamless, so far. My 'about
avast' now says: avast! version 4.6 home edition. I wasn't aware that avast!
had beta versions. Do they?

I installed it but am having trouble enabling the modules. The only one
running is the Standard Shield. The Resume Provider menu choice is greyed
out and won't let me choose anything else. The tray icon tells me 5
providers available and 1 running. How do I enable the other modules?

A couple of things come to mind that you might try...

Rightclick the 'a' icon in systray, select On-Access Protection Control, and
you should be able to select then Start any of your installed modules.

But if that doesn't work, then I'd probably try an online repair first.
While online, goto "Add or Remove Programs", select avast! Antivirus, and
click the Change/Remove button. It will offer 4 options. Select the Repair
option.

If still no joy, I'd ask at the avast! forum:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0
They're usually quick & helpful.

Or if you download it again and install it will ask you if you want to
repair.

Installed version 4.6 last night. Works okay except that the new Web
Shield slowed down my Internet browsing, so I turned it off.

The new newsgroup scanner with Avast 4.6 is certainly a welcome
addition. First time I've ever used an AV program that had that capability.

I thought so too, then ran some throughput tests, and there's not a
noticable difference on my 56K dialup winmodem machine. But my winmodem's
throughput varies quite a bit, so I would only be able to notice big
differences. So I turned web shield off, then back on, and I've also
activated the display so I can see exactly what is being scanned. That's
sorta fun & informative, for awhile, but I might turn it off again later.

The new NNTP scan changes how news messages are downloaded for a NG with my
OE6. They're downloaded in a single bundle, whereas before they came from
the server in smaller bunches, but I don't notice a significant difference
in overall speed. I also appreciate this new NNTP scan feature very much! I
spend at last half of my time on usenet. I like it better than the internet,
in general - no advertising, popups, or other distractions.

I must be missing something here - where abouts in Avast is the NNTP scanner
located? My Avast updated to the latest and I have the Webshield, but can't
seem to locate any mention of NNTP... Maybe I'm just blind, so any guide me
please??

TIA

Never mind - I opened my eyes and viewed the option that was disabled and
found the setting I couldn't see for the tree's!!

Just slap me around the head a few times! Time to go and put my glasses on
I think (if only I can find them...)
