It depends what protocols/drivers your 'mainframe' supports/has. Most
modern ones AS400, etc support ODBC and this can be accessed via Data>Get
External Data>New database query... If your 'mainframe; is in the list of
drivers installed as you travel through the wizard, then you're set to go.
If no you will need to ask an admin if drivers are available and get them
installed locally on your machine (ODBC would be the easiest)

If if you just FTP'd your file from the mainframe to a text file on the pc, you
can open excel and use File|Open and parse the fields into separate columns.

Dave,

Many mainframes have support for attached PC's. There are terminal
emulation programs (5250 or 3270 for IBM mainframes) which have PC support
add-ons, as well as stand-alone PC support programs, which include file
transfer utilities, which do the code translations (EBCDIC-ASCII) and often
have query capabilities built in. A lot depends on the mainframe.

Yes I can import file with 3270 but I have probleme with numeric packed
(example PD6.2) for translate in my PC :(
do you have a solution ?

Do the packed decimal to ASCII conversion on the mainframe.

If you don't have access to some sort of programming language (some sort of a
report writer), then talk to your IT department to have them give you an ASCII
dump of the data.
