Images displayed as links

Andrew Davis

I have no idea what is causing this, but it's driving me mad.

We are still in the process of finalizing if we're going to stay with our
current ISP or move to another one, so we haven't started using exchange
for mail routing yet, we're just using it as a store and sharing right
now, downloading e-mail with Outlook to our exchange boxes.

Now for the problem:

Somehow, I must have tweaked a setting or something, because every single
e-mail that should have images I receive shows up as links instead of
images.

I've done a lot of searching, but I can't find any reason why it would do
this. I've also looked and I don't think I have any exchange policies
blocking images. I also haven't received any reports from users about
this issue. I don't know if they are having it, and haven't reported it,
or if it's an issue with me.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi Andrew,

Which version of Outlook are you using, Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, or others?

If you config another email account such as a POP3 email account in Outlook, are the images displayed as links? Check the following
settings to see if it works.
--------------
1. In Outlook 2003, click the Tools menu > Options.
2. In the Security tab, under 'download pictures', click 'Change automatic download settings'.
3. Uncheck the option 'don't download picture or other content automatically in HTML email.
4. Click OK, OK.
5. Send an email with images to yourself to test the issue. What is the result?

If the above steps don't fix the issue, please take a screen shot of the email which display the images as linkes. Send the screen shot
to me at (e-mail address removed).

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Emily Lin,

This is Outlook 2007 with Exchange, and I don't see options for security
anywhere in there. I'm pretty sure that exchange is controlling the
security of the clients.

I'm using it on-line, not with cached exchange mode.
I'll also e-mail you a couple pictures of what it loks like, from my home
e-mail and my work e-mail (it's a mailing list that I get both places)

Hi Andrew,

I understand that you are using Outlook 2007. Please check the following option instead:
===============
1. Click the Tools menu > Trust Center.
2. Click 'Automatic Download'.
3. Uncheck the option " don't download picture automatically...". click OK.
4. Send a new email to yourself to test the issue. What is the result?

Please send the screen shot to me on your convenience. When I get it, I will reply to you as soon as possible.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

That looks to have fixed it (next e-mail isn't for a week to check)

What could have caused that? I like the idea of not downloading pictures
automatically.

Hi Andrew,

Would you please send a test email with pictures to yourself to test the issue? What is the result?

I understand that you like not downloading pictures automatically. Thus, please check the option "don't download picture
automatically..." and also check all the sub-options under that in Trusted Center\Automatic Download.

Thus, it will auto download the unexpected pictures and only display as links or red X. What is the result?

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.
